Words from a Reader

The “Writing Life Stories” e-mails I receive are such treasures. As soon as I see there is one in my inbox, I read it immediately. I look forward to them and never know how they will touch me. They can be interesting, informative, humorous, and/or touching.

Sleep Deprivation

Does it matter if you sleep six hours early in the evening or six hours late into the morning. No matter what time I go to bed, I can only sleep six hours. I know that means I have sleep deprivation. We need eight hours, right?
At this moment I can hardly see the page because I arose at 5:00 A.M. this morning.
I wonder how many people sleep eight hours every night. If You do, tell me how, please.

  1. Actaully, I read recently that the eight hour rule is not true. Every person is different, and between 6 and 9 is acceptable. So if your body is rested with only 6 hours, you might be okay!

    I tend to get 6 & 1/2 to 7 hours.

  2. I usually sleep about 6 to 7 hours no matter what time I go to bed. This may sound strange but I sleep better if I eat a few corn chips or a banana before retiring. I also found it beneficial to take a short nap in the afternoon.

I found this on another website.
10 Foods to Make You Sleepy

If you thought milk and turkey were the only snooze inducing foods, guess again!

Here is how the Glycemic Index may help you fall asleep faster.

Carbohydrate foods that break down quickly during digestion have higher glycemic rankings. These foods may help you fall asleep in half the usual time if you eat them within 4 hours of bedtime by speeding up the release of Tryptophan and Serotonin, brain chemicals that promote sleep.

The Glycemic Index Scale varies from 1 to 100, the higher the rating or number, the higher the Glycemic count.

  3. Thanks for the advice, Diane and Pat. I had been eating some peanut butter before sacking out, but maybe I'll add a little honey to it. Or I'll make a sandwich. Or have all that with a glass of milk.
Pat, all those carbs are what I like, and they make me feel more "comfortable" as in comfort food. I know that is also because they increase the serotinon and such to my brain. But, darn it, they also add weight right around my middle.
I think I need a day to sleep and catch up. Maybe this weekend.
