Words from a Reader

The “Writing Life Stories” e-mails I receive are such treasures. As soon as I see there is one in my inbox, I read it immediately. I look forward to them and never know how they will touch me. They can be interesting, informative, humorous, and/or touching.

Finally Fall has come

The whisper of falling leaves proclaims Autumn is here in western North Carolina. Driving between Hayesville and Franklin, NC, recently, I imagined the Great Creator painting the sides of the highway with a giant brush, using gold, orange, yellow and all shades in between. It was difficult to keep my eyes on the winding road, but I did.

Lexie is a good traveler so I like to take her with me. She sits in her car seat so she can look out the windshield. The temperature was in the seventies and I had rather be outside than inside as long as I am not in direct sunshine. Lexie prefers direct sunshine. Right now she is lying on the deck soaking up the sun.

I have been exploring new places, new shops and stores. It is great to have free time like this.
At City Lights Books in Sylva, I could not resist purchasing three poetry books. One is Newt Smith's new book, Camino Poems, and I bought one by Catherine Carter, the memory of gills. Hotel Worthy by Valerie Neiman was published last year and I have wanted to read it for a long time. I will write more about them after I have had time to read them carefully and enjoy them slowly.

I hope you are having a wonderful fall season. I know some have been affected by storms and floods, and I sincerely hope you are safe and will soon be back to normal. Fire has hit our region due to the drought we've been enduring. I am not going outside today because of the smoke.

What is fall like in your area?

  1. We are experiencing 10-20 degrees above normal temperatures, with a little rain mixed in, but actually pretty wonderful. I hope to make a final trip to the High Country tomorrow with my hiking friends. :-)

  2. We've had unseasonably wstm temperatures here, in the 60's and 70's. Someone told me last week that it's not expected to snow here until January. In Wyoming, it's hard to believe, but still, I remember past Decembers when there was little or no snow. Will just have to see what happens.

  4. Thanks for this bright post Glenda! I"m glad you are staying inside and out of the smoke, it was quite intense at our cabin a couple days ago.

Fall in Florida is, well, boring. The temps and humidity have dropped, thank goodness, but everything looks much the same. I'm appreciative for my week away at the cabin a couple weeks ago, I got my fill of fall and more :)

Glad you are well, sending you hugs and well wishes!

  5. Well, I finally had to leave my home due to smoke and fires approaching. Some friends had to evacuate a couple of days ago. I plan to go back today and get some things just in case. I
these fires are scary and they are spreading. Now we hear that an arsonist is setting them! Lise, so good to hear from you. So glad you are enjoying your Florida home and still visiting your cabin.

  7. I'm horrified to learn that you have been forced to leave your home because of approaching fires. The smoke would be bad enough, especially with your health concerns. I'm praying that these fires will stop and that God will send us rain. We are only one hour south of you; makes me nervous. And, we do have the smell of smoke around here. This morning, the closer I got to Sautee Nacoochee, the heavier the smoke was. It looked like a rather heavy fog over there. So scary.

The thought of arson has entered my mind a few times lately, but it's so unthinkable that I wouldn't let the thought linger. If these fires are being set, the whole area could be destroyed, and it wouldn't be hard to do.

I pray your home will be okay. Take care.
