Words from a Reader

The “Writing Life Stories” e-mails I receive are such treasures. As soon as I see there is one in my inbox, I read it immediately. I look forward to them and never know how they will touch me. They can be interesting, informative, humorous, and/or touching.

Seasonal Affective Disorder, SAD

photo:Barry Beall
In the grocery store today as I bought a poinsettia, a petite British lady said to me, "They brighten up a room, don't they?"

"Yes," I replied. "And right now I can use some brightness. These dark dreary days..."
"Oh, but we need the rain."

"Yes, I know we need the rain, but it is washing away my Christmas spirit, that and the warm, warm weather we're having."

I can take the 60 degree weather in the middle of December. I grew up where we often wore shorts during the holidays. But days and days of rain and muggy weather make me irritable and difficult to live with. Ask my husband.

Weather affects our moods. Sufferers of SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder, need light treatment in winter months to improve their mood. SAD causes depression in those who live in areas where they seldom see the sun for months on end. If I were to move to Chicago, I would likely be one of those people. Dark rooms during the day bring me down. I want all the lights on, I want sunlight streaming in my windows, but if there is no sun in the sky, Blue Ridge Mountain EMC can fullfil my lighting needs.

With rain promised every day this week, I don't see myself being glad. I'm afraid I will be suffering from S A D.

Does the weather affect your mood? Do you love a good rainy day? Had you rather Christmas bring cold weather and snow? You might prefer a Carribean Island at Christmas. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  1. Glenda, it has been dreary here lately hasn't it? One of our neighbors who has a home in Florida and visits our beautiful mountains occasionally said to me as she left for home several days ago, "North Carolina has done me in and I have to find some sunshine."

I could use some sunshine too but its advertised to come soon. Right now I'm homesick for the islands and Abaco. At Ingles today one of the produce guys had been on a cruise to the Bahamas several months ago and asked me what the weather was like there right now. Gorgeous, warm and sunny was all I could say. He walked away saying, "I've got to go again soon."

So you aren't the only person missing ole man sunshine.

  2. I met a man tonight who recently moved to the mountains from Orlando. He likes this 75 degree weather here now and hopes it will stay, but I also heard tonight that in three days it will be 17 degrees at night, so I guess winter will come after all.
Sam, I love to hear about Abaco and hope someday to get down that way.
